Benefiting and unifying support services for the youth and families of greater Malibu

Joan McCarthy and Andrea Gibson, representatives from The Walt Disney Company presented Kasey Earnest, Chief Professional Officer for the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu Teen Center, along with incoming Board member Teddy Seraphine a $5,000 check for program support as well as 50 tickets to the Disneyland Resort. In addition, Disney will continue to support the Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles and Orange County through the Company's "VoluntEAR" initiative that will facilitate year-round club projects and events.

We are sad to report that Malibu lost one of its most inspiring native sons this week - Dusty Peak. Dusty was a true friend to the youth and families of this community and was instrumental in helping create MFYF and build Boys & Girls Club Teen Center. He continued his alliance and friendship to MFYF in a thousand ways and was never too busy to mentor kids, discuss future possibilities or make our day a brighter place. Every community needs a friend like him at least once in their lives — he inspired a deep respect for the beautiful place we live in through his daily, mindful interactions with nature, people and especially, children. He was a lesson to us all in focusing on what is important — community, family and friends. We will miss you Dusty!

We are honored that his family asked that donations be made in his name to MFYF.

Dear POP friends,

The results are in and the POP Leadership Summit was a resounding success! Over 150 people of all ages and from all walks of life came and talked about what was most important to them about Malibu as a place to grow up and raise families. Every voice was heard. 46% of the attendees filled out commitment cards, others sent emails and filled out the online survey. 70% of those surveyed said that the thing that surprised and delighted them most about the evening was interacting with teens, 65% wanted to attend future gatherings and over 55% loved looking at the possibilities of our community. It is clear we need more positive opportunities for all generations in Malibu to share our common vision and realize our goals.

Here are the themes expressed as most important in working to make Malibu a better place to grow up and raise families:

    1. Community Service Opportunities
    2. Life Skills/Career Training
    3. Leadership Development for both youth and adults
    4. Internships, Mentoring & Partnering
    5. And a “downtown” teen-run facility – which offers all of the above for older teens just as THE CLUB now has the capacity to offer these things to younger teens.

The overwhelming response and commitment shows that Malibu can unify and has all the resources necessary to organize and make things happen for our youth and families. Those who have committed to future involvement have been invited for the next phase of POP on June 24th from 6:30-8:00 at the club. If you couldn’t come in April but would like to be involved, please send us an email at info@mfyf.org and we will be in touch.

Together we can change our powerful ideas into a powerful reality.

With Warm Regards,

MFYF CAT Leadership,
